Spiritual Character of Church Leaders
A person being considered as a church leader must be a Christian who:
Demonstrates the attributes of the Spirit of God
Philippians 2.5-11
Displays the heart of Christ
Displays the heart of a servant
Displays the obedience of Christ
1 Corinthians 13
Loves with patience (not short tempered or impatient)
Does not keep account of wrongs done to them (grudges)
Thinks well before speaking
Is constructive in word and actions (builds up rather than tears down)
Does not try to control – possessing rather than sharing
Finds no satisfaction in impressing others
Does not think to highly of themselves (ego)
Understands who they are as a broken human being
Can set self-issues aside – objectivity
Good manners in conduct (respect for others)
Not easily provoked
Laughs and shares joy
Practical expressions of these “Biblical Principles”
Believes God can do something new and has faith to follow that leading
Is not a one issue oriented person but has the greater vision of the church
Can work well with groups
Is able to share power and authority
Can create a committee and work through it
Is able and willing to express the Gospel of Jesus Christ in work and action
Is active in the life of the church (regular worship)
Shows a desire to grow in discipleship (Christian education)
Is clearly gifted in areas of responsibility within the Session
Understands for whom the church exists and God’s purpose through it
Understands the church is to grow through conversion not membership transfer
